From staging spectacular fashion shows in China to organising charity sales to support nature conservation, Hideaki Lim (top, in blue) has had a very busy year. Add to that his recent appointment as a skin care (Cecedile) and men’s spa ambassador. Clearly, this multi-tasking Sagittarian, who calls himself a cyber fashion designer, is hitting it big after more than a decade in the fashion industry.

Ever since he opened his boutique in a Kuala Lumpur hotel in 1991, the 30-something designer has consistently concocted futuristic twists on fashion that delight and shock the Malaysian market.

Lim is the first to admit that not many people can accept his creations. “I am perhaps way ahead of my time,” chuckled the graduate of the Parsons School of Design, Hong Kong.

But just as there are detractors, there are as many fans, going by the number of beauty queens and celebrities who embrace his out-of-this-world apparel. Lim added another feather to his cap when he won the International Designer Award for Fashion Beyond 2000 in 1998. Lim’s collection was also featured in KL Fashion Week.

After making his mark on the local fashion scene, Lim was ready to show off his creativity to the rest of the world.
