A creative idea with a distinctive Malaysian touch won three product design students from LimKokWing University College of Creative Technology (LUCT) the first prize in Malaysia's first Floating Lights Design Competition.
Kevin Lau, 21, Leong Huang Zi and Didy Prasethio, both 20, impressed the judges with their pretty design called Illuminated Unity.
The three designed and built a prototype of their floating light using polymer resin to form the daisy-shaped lights. The eight petals resemble sampans and represent Malaysia's multi-ethnic groups.
The lights are versatile and commercially sensitive, as the flower centres are designed to glow with changing company logos and colours.
Lau, Leong and Prasethio took home RM3,000 for their efforts in creating the lights which took over 36 hours to create at a prize- presentation ceremony held at KL Tower on Thursday.
The Floating Lights Design Competition was organised by architectural lighting consultants Backstage Asia and the KL Tower to encourage creativity in lighting design.
Ten teams from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UTM), LUCT and CENFAD submitted designs for the competition.
The second prize of RM2,000 went to the team 'Storm Lighting' from UPM while third the prize of RM1,000 was awarded to the group Luminouso
