Engineering group Downer EDI Ltd said its Singapore-based business, CPG Corp, has been engaged by Japan's Taisei Corp and its joint-venture partners Kumagai-Gama-Nurol to lead the design of the 1 bln usd Marmaray Railway Bosphorus Tube Crossing project in Turkey.
Kumagai-Gama-Nurol is a consortium of Turkish and Japanese companies.
Downer said the project involves the design and construction of a 13.6 kilometer railway tunnel under the Bosphorus Straits, together with four underground railway stations - three on the European side and one on the Asian side.
Downer said the underwater railway tunnel will be one of the deepest of its kind in the world, being 55 meters below sea level at its lowest point, and will also be earthquake-proof.
The tunnel is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
