
Driven by the success of the global video game industry as well as the growth of the local online gaming business, the Mapua Information Technology Center (MITC) may introduce game development into its curriculum during its next school year, which starts in July.
MITC might introduce game development as a full-fledged two-year course or as a special interest subject, the school's academic director said.
Michelle Casio, MITC academic director, said the school is in discussions with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Canada on establishing its game development course.
She said that BCIT is one of the top information technology schools in North America and has extensive programs in animation, software development, and game design. Its graduates work with some of the biggest computer game development firms in the US, she added.
"BCIT is already in South Korea offering game development courses. They are expanding to the Philippines and they looked at both MITC and De La Salle-College of St. Benilde to offer their courses," Casio said.
Casio said MITC's gaming development curriculum could either be locally developed with some additions from BCIT or wholly adopted from BCIT's gaming development course. The latter however would be very expensive and may not be affordable even to well-off students, she
