The Red Dot Award Concept Design
Singapore has beaten out other Asian countries to serve as host to one of the world's most prestigious design awards.

Into its 50th year, the Red Dot Design Award is introducing a third category, Concept Design, which will overseen in Singapore.

This is the first time the Award will be administered outside of Germany, where the other two categories of Product Design and Communication Design will continue to be held.

Past recipients of a Red Dot award have included Lamborghini, Nokia and Apple. And for the host country, it means an opportunity to become an international platform for the evolution of design concepts.

This is a milestone for the DesignSingapore Council - which sees it as a chance for the Republic to become significantly more than just a dot on the global design map.

Said the council's deputy chairman, Mr Tham Khai Meng: "The presence of the Award promises to raise both the standard and profile of Singapore design."

The president of the Red Dot Award, Professor Peter Zec, said Asia was "an interesting ground to grow new ideas and there's a huge potential for design development".

As for why Singapore was chosen, he said: "Singapore is like Switzerland in Europe. Everything is about design."

Prof Zec said Singapore was "the most multicultural city in the world" and its respect for legal right
