Project to Commemorate Jewish War Vets
A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Toronto on Sunday for a memorial in to Canada's Jewish war veterans.

Flames of Memory is designed by architect Daniel Libeskind.

It will be located at the corner of Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West in Earl Bales Park.

The memorial will consist of an amphitheatre with a stage that's surrounded by a sweeping, menorah-inspired backdrop.

Retired major-general Lewis MacKenzie told the audience at the groundbreaking that, within Canada's Jewish community, two-thirds of eligible males volunteered for military service during the Second World War.

"Now that's a number," MacKenzie said.

The memorial is scheduled to open next summer.
