Seattle Cultural Center by Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd

Seattle Cultural Center by Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd
Schematic plan for redeveloping eight blocks in the heart of Seattle's cultural center.

The plan includes: a 'Clean, Green, and Grand' streetscape design, to make way-finding easier and the streetscape more inviting during the day; architectural modifications to what was once the 'back side' of 1962 World's Fair buildings; traffic modifications to maintain arterial function of Mercer Street while increasing safety and comfort of pedestrians; and a grand lighting scheme to create a timeless, site-specific, and unifying identity for the world-class arts venues in the District.

The lighting scheme, 'Planes of Light,' evokes the imagery of colorfully lit theater districts in a method that reveals no visible light fixtures.

Light is not an agglomeration of objects but a transformation of existing surfaces to be planes of color and light.
