
A Secessionist architectural jewel saved from dereliction, the Gresham faced demolition before this stunning restoration and refurbishment.
Richmond International approached the immense design project with passion and insight which is evident, especially in the detail.
The FX Awards judges were moved by the way that the team had meticulously researched the history of the building in order to bring it to life once again, and the way in which they sought out local craftspeople to create restrained interiors with local relevance and colour and avoid pastiche.
The design is respectful of the original but includes many contemporary touches such as the decorative touches especially in the plasterwork and copper details.
The hotel has a comfortable and restful feeling in both the public and private areas, and is, as the judges remarked, 'somewhere you want to stay and not want to leave'.
